FAGUS SYLVATICA PURPUREA COPPER BEECH tree in new zealand

FAGUS SYLVATICA PURPUREA - COPPER BEECH

A large tree that is capable of great height if the conditions suit. It has a long slender trunk which greys with age. Glossy dark purple leaves appear in spring and fade to a copper bronze tone towards the end of summer. Slow growing as a specimen tree but spectacular with time, it has shallow roots so a sheltered spot is preferred. It can also make a great deciduous hedge as it responds well to trimming.

Beyond the norm
The Copper Beech, like the European Beech, trims very well to form a classic European-hedge effect.  The fresh spring new leaves are vibrant purple, maturing to a bronze before turning yellow in the autumn and then old leaves hold on to the tree over the winter months.  This makes for an ever-changing hedge throughout the seasons.
